The 1¢ article

For thirty years the web has had no good way to pay a cent for something small. Not because nobody wanted to: Blendle, Flattr, Google Contributor and a dozen others tried. They ran into the same wall.

The wall is the card network. A card payment has a fixed fee of about 30 cents, so a 5 cent sale costs the seller 25 cents to accept. The price of a single article, a single photo, a single answer could never go below a quarter or so, and most never went below a monthly subscription.

The rest of this article is 1¢. All of it goes to the writer's Nano address, through our till.

How it works

  1. You pay the exact amount from your purse or any Nano wallet to nano133.com's till, which passes all of it on to the writer's own address. There is no fee. A payment that arrives too late goes back to you.
  2. nano133.com sees the payment confirm on the Nano network, usually in under a second, and signs a receipt for this item, this site and this device.
  3. The page's server checks the receipt before it sends the paid part. Without it, the paid part is never in the page.
  4. The receipt renews itself on this device for 30 days. On another device, sign in with the same Nano address; you never pay twice.
  5. A shared link, or a copied receipt, unlocks nothing for anyone else. Run the test above after you unlock.

This is a working prototype of Unlock, a library that will let any creator sell single items for cents with Nano. Test it with a real cent.

Put this on your own site

The same idea, for your own posts: readers pay you directly, and your site checks the payment with a Nano node.

Nano Unlock for WordPress

A free, open-source plugin.

  • Lock part of a post: a recipe, a chapter, a photo.
  • Readers pay a few cents in Nano, straight to your own address.
  • Your site checks the payment itself: no account, no keys, no fees.

The browser demo is a working shop: its Unlock button takes a real payment of about 1 cent in Nano. It runs WordPress in your browser, with nothing to install.
